Car engines and associated components have a variety of fluids contained within their structure. While these liquids remain in situ, the car should run and perform as intended. However, if there’s an issue with the integrity of a closed system, it can spring a leak. The color and location of the puddle under your car tells you a lot about what’s going on.
Engine Oil (Amber to Dark Brown)
The most common leak of all. Oil spots usually appear under the front-center of the vehicle and feel slick between the fingers. Worn gaskets, a loose drain plug, or a damaged oil filter seal are frequent causes. Driving with low oil is one of the fastest ways to destroy an engine.
Coolant (Green, Orange, or Pink — Sweet Smell)
Coolant leaks show up near the front of the car, often below the radiator or water pump. Because coolant regulates engine temperature, even a slow leak eventually leads to overheating. It’s also toxic to pets, so clean up any puddles promptly.
Transmission Fluid (Red to Reddish-Brown)
Transmission fluid tends to pool toward the middle of the vehicle. Low fluid can cause hard shifting, slipping gears, and — if ignored — very expensive transmission damage.
Brake Fluid (Clear to Yellowish, Oily)
Brake fluid leaks are rare but serious. They can appear near the wheels or under the master cylinder. Any suspected brake fluid leak should be inspected immediately — your stopping power depends on it.
Water (Clear, Thin)
Good news: plain water dripping under the front passenger area on a hot Florida day is usually just A/C condensation — completely normal.
