Tips In A Jiffy

Warning Signs to Look Out for with Your Car’s Radiator

If you spot the warning signals early, most car radiator problems can be easily fixed. The following discusses what you need to look out for (and make no mistake, some of them can be very, very subtle to begin with…).

If you spot the warning signals early, most car radiator problems can be easily fixed. The following discusses what you need to look out for (and make no mistake, some of them can be very, very subtle to begin with…).

A Temperature Gauge That Runs Higher Than Normal

You don’t need the red zone to have a problem. A gauge that sits even slightly higher than its usual position — or climbs in traffic and settles on the highway — is an early whisper that the radiator isn’t shedding heat the way it should.

Coolant Puddles or a Sweet Smell

Green, orange, or pink fluid under the front of the car, or a sweet syrupy smell after driving, means coolant is escaping. Slow seeps often show up only as a crusty, discolored residue around radiator seams and hose connections.

Low Coolant Without a Visible Leak

If you’re topping off the reservoir more than rarely, the coolant is going somewhere — possibly leaking only when hot and pressurized, or being drawn into the engine. Either way, it warrants inspection.

Sludge or Discolored Coolant

Healthy coolant is bright and translucent. Rusty brown color or an oily, muddy sludge in the reservoir means corrosion or contamination inside the system — both of which clog the radiator’s narrow passages and cripple its cooling ability.

Cabin Heater Blowing Cold

Oddly enough, a weak cabin heater is a classic cooling-system clue: low coolant or poor circulation starves the heater core, which is fed by the same system as the radiator.

Crusty White or Green Deposits

Dried coolant leaves chalky residue at the exact point of a slow leak. Finding these deposits during a quick look under the hood is how small leaks get caught before they become breakdowns.

Cooling systems fail hardest in Florida heat. If any of these signs sound familiar, drive in to your neighborhood Jiffy Lube of Florida for a cooling system check — catching it early is the difference between a quick fix and an engine rebuild.
