Understanding Your Drivetrain

Each of these does the same basic job — carry heat away from a set of gears that never stops turning — and each of them breaks down doing it. Which ones your vehicle has depends on how it puts power to the road.

The Service

Differential & Transfer Case

Think of it as an oil change for your differential. Differentials work with the transmission to deliver power to the axle that turns your wheels, and let those wheels turn at different speeds when you corner — most four-wheel drives have both a front and a rear. The transfer case is a gearbox found only on four-wheel drive and some all-wheel drive vehicles, splitting power between axles as traction changes. Jiffy Lube® drains the used fluid in either and replaces it with fluid that meets or exceeds your manufacturer's specifications.

Why It Matters Here

Towing And Sitting

Transmission fluid lubricates, cools and cleans the gearbox and holds the hydraulic pressure it needs to shift at all — it is doing more jobs at once than any other fluid in the car. Two things on the Suncoast are hard on it in opposite directions: pulling a boat or trailer loads a gearbox far more than the mileage suggests, and a car left standing for months while its owner is away is not a car whose fluids are in good order either. Low miles and easy work are not the same thing.

What counts as the drivetrain?

Everything between the engine and the wheels. In most cars that means the transmission and one or two differentials; in a four-wheel drive it also means a transfer case. Each runs in its own fluid with its own replacement schedule.

How often should drivetrain fluids be changed?

At your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. Jiffy Lube® recommends following manufacturer recommendations, where applicable, for maintenance schedules and service intervals — the figure in your owner's manual is the one that counts, and it differs by component and by vehicle.

I tow a boat. Does that change anything?

Towing puts sustained load and heat through the transmission and the differentials, and heat is what breaks the fluid down. Many manufacturers publish a shorter interval for towing or heavy-duty use — check your manual, and mention the towing when you drive in so we can factor it in.

The car sat for months while I was away. Is that a problem?

Standing does not wear fluid the way driving does, but it is worth a look before you go back to regular use — leaks show up as a puddle where you parked, and the first drives after a long layup are when anything neglected tends to announce itself.
